USC Coach Tim Floyd said he has emphasized defense during the Trojans' first couple of practices because he had focused on offense in the 10 days of preparation for the team's Labor Day trip to Mazatlan, Mexico, to play a Mexican professional team.

"We had 16 offensive practices during the summer, and now we're going to try to build the defense," Floyd said.

Are the Trojans further ahead because of their early practices?

"Probably offensively and in terms of organization and ability to listen," Floyd said.

Freshman guard Marcus Simmons turned an ankle Saturday night and was held out of practice Sunday. Floyd said there was no immediate timetable for Simmons' return. "He can't put any pressure on it right now, so I don't know," Floyd said. . . .

Rob Brooks who was the head manager the last 2 seasons, has left to become Co-Head Coach at Stoneridge Prep in Simi Valley, CA.
